Ready-made outdoor cushions exist because a lot of furniture is almost the same size. Almost is the word that shows up later as a gap at the arm and a pad that slides forward when you stand up.
Custom costs more up front. It is cut from the numbers on your frame, in a fabric you chose, with a fill that drains. Over two or three seasons that is usually the cheaper way to keep the furniture you already paid for.
When ready-made is enough
A basic dining chair with a rectangular 20×18 seat, used on a covered porch, in a color you do not care to match to anything else. If a warehouse pad sits on that chair without hanging off the sides, buy it and spend the difference on swatches for the sofa.
When custom is the only honest option
Built-in benches, curved sectionals, trapezoid dining seats, extra-deep lounges, anything with a brand-specific back height. Ready-made is guessing. Guessing looks sloppy in a photograph and feels worse after twenty minutes.
Custom also wins when you are replacing a whole conversation set and want one dye lot. Mixing three “close” navy pads from three brands is how a patio looks accidental.
Fill and fabric are the rest of the price
A cheap pad is cheap because the foam holds water and the cloth is printed. Our outdoor standard is densified fiber and solution-dyed acrylic. That is not a lifestyle slogan. It is why the cushion is still usable after a week of thunderstorms.
