Patio furniture almost always outlasts the cushions that came with it. Sun fades the covers. Rain sits in cheap foam. Seams split at the welting. The frame is still sound — it just looks tired because the pads no longer fit or no longer drain.
Replacement cushions are the cheaper, faster path when the set is worth keeping. The mistake is ordering a “standard size” and hoping. Outdoor collections are rarely standard. This guide is how we replace them at Cushion Pros: measure the furniture, choose a fill that belongs outdoors, and sew a cover in a fabric that will still look like itself next August.
When replacement beats a new set
Keep the frames if the welds are solid, the sling or wicker is intact, and you like the scale of the seating. Replacing four chair pads and two sofa cushions is a fraction of a new conversation set — and you get to pick the fabric this time.
Shop a new set if the frame is rusted through, the seating geometry is wrong for how you sit, or you are changing the layout of the patio. Cushions cannot fix a chair that was never comfortable.
Measure the furniture, not the old pad
Old foam compresses. Old covers stretch. If you copy a worn cushion you will order a pad that is too small. Measure the seat opening on the frame: width side-to-side at the widest sitting point, depth front-to-back, and thickness you actually want (not what is left of the old foam).
Dining chairs usually want 2–3 inches. Deep seating is 5–6. Chaises run longer than people guess — measure the full recline length, not the folded look in a photo. Benches are one rectangle; if the seat is a trapezoid, capture both the front width and the back width.
Use a tailor’s tape on wicker and curved rails. Enter the numbers in the 3D designer and check the preview before you buy. We build within ½ inch of what you type.
Fill that can live outside
Indoor foam holds water. Skip it on an open patio. Densified fiber is our standard outdoor core: rain drains through and we can cut any footprint. Reticulated foam is the premium upgrade, wrapped in batting, when you want the fastest dry-out after a storm.
Loose poly-fill belongs in toss pillows, lumbars, and some backs — not in a dining seat you sit on every night. If the set mixes seats and pillows, order each fill on purpose instead of matching them out of habit.
Fabric that still looks like itself in August
Solution-dyed acrylic — Sunbrella and the other marine-grade lines in our library — is the fabric we recommend for full-sun seating. The color is in the fiber, not printed on top, so it fades slower and cleans with soap. Order a swatch. Screen color is a guess; morning light on your deck is not.
We do not sell umbrellas, shade sails, or furniture frames. We sew the cushions that sit on the furniture you already own. If the set is a brand we keep hard patterns for (Tortuga, NCI, and others), start on replacement cushions. Everyone else uses the designer.
Covers only, or cushions with fill
If the foam is still springy and only the fabric is shot, a replacement cover is enough — as long as you can get the old cover off without destroying the insert. If the core is crumbling or sour, replace the whole cushion. Covers without zippers are not a weekend DIY swap; say so when you order.
Once the new pads are on the frame, flip them weekly the first month so the fill settles evenly. Store them in a box through the worst storms if you can. That is care, not a product we do not make.
