A cushion lasts as long as the cloth and the fill. Outdoor performance fabrics are solution-dyed so color goes through the fiber, not just the surface — that is why Sunbrella and similar acrylics hold up in UV better than a typical indoor print. Moisture matters too: in rain or humidity you want a breathable cloth, not a plastic laminate that traps damp against the foam. Flame ratings are printed on commercial-grade goods; residential patio sets usually need fade, mildew, and cleanability more than a hospitality spec.
Start with a swatch. Filter the library by brand, color, or pattern, then order a 2×3″ cut or a curated pack. Leave the samples on the furniture for a day. When the color is right, open the designer — the fabric you picked is the same bolt we cut in Griffin, Georgia.
A swatch is a small cut from the same bolt we sew. Screens lie about color and texture. Leave the swatch in the room (or on the patio) at morning and evening light before you commit to a full cushion.
Narrow to your top two or three, drape them on the furniture, and add them to a mood board if the room is still in progress. Check them at different times of day — golden morning light and lamp light at night will not look the same.
All fabrics fade in UV; outdoor fabrics are tested to hold color longer. In rainy or humid climates pick a breathable performance cloth (solution-dyed acrylic such as Sunbrella) so air can move and mildew is less likely. Laminated “waterproof” layers can trap moisture underneath.
