Most patio “makeovers” in a shopping cart start with a new sofa. That is the expensive order of operations. The frames you already have are usually fine. The cushions are what people see, sit on, and photograph.
Starting with custom outdoor cushions lets you change the color story, the thickness, and the fit without hauling a sectional through the side gate. You can always add a table or a planter later. You cannot undo a $4,000 furniture order because the cushions were the actual problem.
Read the furniture before you shop fabric
Walk the set the way a tailor would. Dining chairs that slide under a table want thinner, tailored seats. Lounge chairs want a real back. A bench that people linger on wants more than a 2-inch pad. Write the measurements down before you fall in love with a stripe.
If two chairs are a half-inch different — they often are — order them as two lines that share a fabric and a dye lot. Matching “close enough” is how a makeover still looks off in photos.
Pick a palette you can live with in July
Navy, oatmeal, sage, and terracotta are doing the work on American patios this year because they hide pollen and still look intentional next to stone and teak. A bold floral is fine on a toss pillow you can swap. It is a commitment on a sofa seat you cannot hide.
Order swatch packs and look at them in the morning and at 6 p.m. Solution-dyed acrylic holds color; your eyes do not hold a phone screenshot. If the patio is full sun, skip anything that only looks good indoors.
Make the cushions do the styling
A sofa, two chairs, and a round of toss pillows in one fabric family will read as a finished room even if the coffee table is leftover. Welting outlines the shape. Boxed edges look tailored. Knife edges look softer. You choose those in the designer; they are not a separate product.
We do not sell rugs, lanterns, or shade structures. Those are easy to add from anywhere. The hard part — cushions that actually fit the frames — is what we sew in Griffin.
Do the makeover in one dye lot
Order the whole seating group together when you can. Fabric dye lots shift. A chair ordered in October will not always match a sofa ordered in March, even in the same SKU. If you must split the order, keep a swatch taped inside a cabinet and tell us the lot when you call.
Standard production is about 15 business days. That is still faster than waiting on a furniture container. Design the set, check the 3D preview, and let the frames you already own do the rest.
