How to Measure Patio Furniture for Custom Cushions

How to Measure Patio Furniture for Custom Cushions

A custom cushion is only as good as the numbers you send. We sew to those numbers. This is the measuring method we wish every order used.

It is the same idea as our measuring guide, written for patio furniture specifically: chairs, sofas, chaises, benches.

Tools

A tailor’s tape for wicker and curves. A rigid tape is fine on a rectangular teak bench. Paper for the two widths on a trapezoid seat. Do not use the old cushion as a ruler.

Width, depth, thickness

Width is side to side at the widest sitting point. Depth is front to back. Thickness is how tall you want the finished pad, not how tall the old foam still is.

For a back, measure width and the height from the seat surface to the top of the rail. Chair backs are often 14–20 inches. Sofa backs are taller. If you guess, the back will look like a different piece of furniture.

Odd shapes

Front wider than back: give both widths. Rounded front: say so, or pick rounded corners in the designer. A chaise: measure full recline length. A corner sectional: measure each seat as its own cushion.

Enter the numbers in the designer and look at the 3D preview. If the preview looks like a different chair than the one on your deck, the numbers are wrong — not the software. Call (866) 554-0804 if the frame is a shape you cannot describe in rectangles.
